How to break a fast

After you are done with your fasting period it is equally important to break the fast in a proper way. You need to ease into the food consumption cycle in order for the body to adjust. Since fasting is a health related goal you should always try to break it with healthy and easily digestible foods. Below are a few examples of what is advised to be consumed right after fasting.

Post fast foods
  • SOUPS – Having soup is a great way to break a fast. Simple soup with proteins like lentils is extremely good. Avoid using heavy cream or high fiber foods in the soup. It is easily digestible and easy on the stomach.
  • BONE BROTH – This needs a separate mention rather than being clustered with soup because is extremely nutrient dense and is one of the best ways to break a fast.
  • FERMENTED FOODS – Food such as yoghurt or sauerkraut is highly advised as they provide good gut bacteria and enzymes.
  • HEALTHY FATS – Foods such as Avocado and Eggs which contain good amount of healthy fats is highly recommended.
  • VEGETABLES – Cooked, soft and starchy vegetables like potatoes help to fill up the stomach after fasting with ease. Avoid raw vegetables as it might cause discomfort in the stomach.
  • FRUIT SMOOTHIES – Less acidic fruits like watermelon or bananas are recommended. Make them fresh and avoid buying pre packaged smoothies from the store.

There are certain foods that should be avoided right after the fast otherwise overall fasting benefits will be reduced. You could consume them a few hours or even a day after breaking a fast but not right away.

  • HIGH SUGAR FOODS – Stay away from anything high in sugar as high blood sugar will spike your insulin levels to a dangerously high level.
  • PROCESSED FOODS – This should be avoided regardless of fasting however in today’s world it is difficult to avoid due to our fast paced lifestyles. Stay away from processed foods as long as possible once the fasting period ends.
  • HIGH FIBER FOODS – Try to avoid it right after fasting as it can cause stomach distress because it is difficult for the stomach to digest.
